New Macmillan resources – Learning Hub for Professionals

Macmillan’s Professional Development and Knowledge Learning Hub have several new resources available to professionals. To register for the hub, please click here.

Treatment Summaries

This brand-new e-learning resource within the Learning Hub provides learners with a comprehensive overview of Treatment Summaries, including aims and benefits, what makes a good treatment summary and the consequences when a treatment summary is not available.  It includes interviews with professionals and an animated case study written by a person with lived experience of cancer. This resource supports best practice and person-centred care and provides practical tips from professionals on how treatment summaries can be introduced into practice.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a conversation style which has been developed over the past 40 years. It focusses on the language of change and can support people to explore and resolve ambivalence. Macmillan currently offers an eLearning course and virtual classroom on the topic. These are for healthcare professionals looking to develop their questioning and communication skills in talking with patients about change. MI may be helpful when supporting patients before and after treatment, lifestyle behaviour changes on topics such as diet, smoking, alcohol consumption or engaging in screening programmes. MI can be used in a variety of healthcare settings. Professionals can book their place on a virtual classroom or access e-learning by registering or logging in to The Learning Hub Learning and development | Healthcare professionals | Macmillan Cancer Support.

Genomics

The Learning Hub has a topic area all about genomics with a number of recorded webinars, some introductory videos, and a link to Health Education England’s Genomics 101 programme, which is free for healthcare professionals to access. This recently published blog also demonstrates the increasing importance of understanding genomics in the work that we do for Macmillan. Demystifying genomics in cancer care | Macmillan Cancer Support

  • Introduction to Loss, Grief and Bereavement is an essential level e-learning course that explores the wide range of losses and grief that may be experienced by people living with cancer.
  • Working with Children facing Loss and Bereavement is a toolkit that signposts to bereavement resources that help professionals supporting children experiencing loss, their adults, carers, and wider family.  It has information on organizations and charities that support work in this space.  It considers pre-bereavement as well as support after death for younger children through to teens.  It highlights learning opportunities and training course for those who require more knowledge for their roles and importantly, it signposts to support for professionals who regularly support children facing loss and bereavement
