Crisis Support

A mental health crisis can mean different things to different people, but it typically refers to a point at which an individual feels unable to cope or remain in control of their situation.

It may involve a sudden or ongoing deterioration in mental health, resulting in significant emotional distress or anxiety, difficulty managing day‑to‑day life, thoughts of suicide or self‑harm, or experiences such as hallucinations or hearing voices.

Individuals requiring urgent mental health support can contact NHS 111 and select the mental health option, for 24/7 access to urgent support.

Where to get urgent help for mental health – NHS

Mental health crisis alternatives to A&E include NHS 111 (option mental health), local crisis cafés or sanctuaries, peer support, and national phonelines such as the Samaritans: 116 123 and
Papyrus: 0800 068 4141

For immediate, life-threatening emergencies, always call 999.
