The South East London Cancer Alliance, has collaborated with the Baked Bean Charity and the Guys Cancer Academy, to create a Learning disabilities and cancer educational module.

This is a new training module designed to help healthcare professionals better support people with learning disabilities in accessing cancer care and screening services. The brilliant students from Baked Bean, have made sure the module remains authentic and includes information that matters most to people with a learning disability.

The module supports the improvement of cancer risk mitigation, patient experience, early diagnosis and ultimately better outcomes for this patient population. The module has been designed for all primary care staff, but it does contain information for secondary care colleagues that may need to support someone with a learning disability, by providing the following:

  • Highlighting the additional healthcare needs of people with a learning disability
  • Effective communication strategies tailored to the patient group
  • Reasonable adjustments you can implement, to improve accessibility for patients with a learning disability
  • Best practice in making cancer screening and health checks accessible for patients with a learning disability
  • How to create and maintain a supportive and inclusive practice environment
