What is the Tessa Jowell New to Neuro-oncology course?
New to Neuro-Oncology is a targeted educational programme for the supportive and assistive workforce who care for adult patients with a brain tumour. The programme combines live webinars, applied case-study sessions and a curated resource library to build core knowledge, confidence and practical skills aligned to the ACCEND framework.
Who is the course for?
The course is open to everyone working within neuro-oncology, tailored specifically towards band 3-5 supportive and assistive workers caring for adult patients with a brain tumour in both general/non-specialist settings and specialist neuro-oncology services.
Course format
The course encompasses a blended learning programme comprising:
Four live webinars (every 1-2 weeks) with on-demand recordings available afterwards
Webinar 1 – Brain Tumours 101 - Thursday 14.05.26 @12:00-13:00: Build a foundational understanding of the brain, its main functions, and the basics of brain tumours, linking this knowledge to day-to-day patient care.
Webinar 2 – Symptoms and Signs of a Brain Tumour - Tuesday 26.05.26 @13:00-14:00: Recognise common signs and symptoms of brain tumours and treatment effects, understand why they vary between patients, and know how to respond safely and effectively.
Webinar 3 – Part of the Neuro-oncology Team - Thursday 11.06.26 @ 13:00-14:00: Understand the neuro-oncology patient pathway, the roles of different team members, referral pathways, and how to work confidently within the multidisciplinary team.
Webinar 4 – Patients and Families - Wednesday 17.06.26 @ 12:00-13:00: Communicate effectively with patients and families, providing reassurance, guidance, and signposting to relevant services and support networks.
