  5. Health Inequalities

Health Inequalities are unfair and avoidable differences in the status of people’s health. There are different types of health inequalities which can impair health literacy – the ability of individuals to access, understand and apply information crucial to make informed healthcare decisions1. Consequently, this can result in higher cancer incidence and poorer outcomes, due to late presentations of cancer and delays in diagnosis.

Resources

1.  Cheshire & Merseyside Cancer Alliance: Health Inequalities and Patient Experience (HIPE), the 123 Approach

The CMCA HIPE123 Approach online course uses an interactive approach to examine how health inequalities can impact cancer and other illnesses. It includes real-life examples from audio interviews and features an interactive snakes & ladders game to help learners understand the principles. The course provides practical advice on implementing changes in clinical practice. A CPD Certificate is available upon completion of the course

(Free access, but needs log in)

Time to complete: approx. 90 minutes

2.  NHS England: CORE20PLUS5 (adults) – an approach to reducing health inequalities

The NHS England: CORE20PLUS5 article covers the NHS England initiative launched in 2021 to reduce health inequalities. It targets the most deprived 20% of the UK population (CORE20) and addresses five clinical areas: maternity, severe mental illness, chronic respiratory disease, early cancer diagnosis, and hypertension (Plus 5). There is a downloadable summary infographic and links to a free NHS E-Learning Module on these topics (on their e-Learning for health platform, login required, free), with a course for each clinical area

Time to read: approx. 5 minutes

3.  Red Whale: Health Inequalities and Cancer

The Red Whale: Health Inequalities and Cancer article defines health inequalities, identifies who is affected by them, examines their impact on cancer diagnosis, and discusses potential solutions

(Log in access needed – see PrOCEDE intro for details)

Time to read: approx. 15 minutes

4.  RCGP e-Learning Podcasts

The RCGP Podcast: Reducing health inequalities in primary care and social prescribing is hosted by an RCGP clinician who is joined by a relevant clinical expert to share their specialist knowledge on the featured topic. CPD points are available upon completion and time spent on reflection of implementation into your practice.

When accessed, scroll down to these two topics:

  • Reducing Health Inequalities in Primary Care

This podcast features RCGP GPs, Professors Margaret Ikpoh and Dom Patterson. They discuss health inequalities, their relevance to general practice, and potential solutions to mitigate their impact.

Time to listen: 14 minutes

  • Health Inequalities podcast on social prescribing

This is useful to listen to once the learner has used one or more of the above resources. This podcast features a discussion between a GP and a Social Prescriber about how GP's can collaborate with Social Prescribers to address health inequalities faced by patients.

Time to listen: approx. 19 minutes

5. Cancer Care and Screening for people with a Learning Disability in Primary Care (South East London Cancer Alliance)

Cancer Care and Screening for people with a Learning Disability in Primary Care (South East London Cancer Alliance) is an e-learning module that highlights cancer related challenges (screening, prevention, diagnosis, treatment), communication strategies, adjustments needed (Equality Act 2010) and support in people with learning disabilities.

Optional submodules included.

(Free access)

Time to complete: approx. 60-120 minutes (depending on how many optional submodules also used)
